# Google reshuffles AI leadership as Demis Hassabis steps back

Alphabet has reshuffled Google’s AI leadership. Demis Hassabis will move from chief executive of Google DeepMind to chairman and become Alphabet’s chief scientist. Chief technology officer Koray Kavukcuoglu will handle the unit’s daily operations as senior vice-president. Hassabis will continue leading Isomorphic Labs, the company’s AI drug-discovery venture. Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le are leaving to start Discovery Loop, a public benefit AI company. The changes follow delays to a flagship Gemini update and recent departures to rivals OpenAI and Anthropic. Alphabet shares fell about 4%, although Bloomberg reported an intraday fall of up to 5.5%. Hassabis said he wanted to focus on artificial general intelligence and its wider effects.
