# Google veterans Ghemawat and Dean leave to launch AI startup

Google veterans Sanjay Ghemawat and Jeff Dean have left the company after nearly three decades to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on using artificial intelligence in science and engineering. They are joined by former Google researchers Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le. Google will support the venture as a founding investor and cloud partner. Kota-raised Ghemawat helped build Google File System, MapReduce, Bigtable and Spanner, systems that underpin large-scale computing. Dean worked with him on several of these projects and later led major AI research. Discovery Loop aims to develop systems that can propose, conduct and assess experiments, according to reports cited by the sources. The venture has also attracted investment from Vinod Khosla, The Times of India reports.
