The quake has killed at least 270 people and caused widespread damage, with rescue efforts continuing. The US Geological Survey attributed the earthquake to strike-slip faulting, in which sections of Earth’s crust move horizontally. The quake occurred about 110 kilometres deep in Colombia’s Pacific region, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Scientists said HAARP’s upward-pointing radio transmitters lack the energy and physical mechanism to trigger earthquakes.
