Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Shiromani Akali Dal chief, was attacked with a kirpan on August 13 inside Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji on the outskirts of Nanded, Maharashtra. He underwent a 90-minute surgery for tendon and nerve injuries and is now stable, doctors said. The former Punjab deputy chief minister is expected to be discharged on August 14 and flown to Punjab. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal to inquire about her husband's health, a gesture she described as 'deeply touched'. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also spoke to Badal. The accused, Jaspal Singh, a 60-year-old sewadar with commerce and law degrees, was arrested. Times Now reports that police sources say the accused cited Punjab's drug menace during interrogation as a motive.
