Some Hyderabad residents still carry the names of India’s freedom leaders, decades after such names were common in school registers. Telangana’s Tele-MANAS Centre head Jawaharlal Nehru says his freedom fighter father insisted on naming him after India’s first Prime Minister, despite advice that Nehru was a surname. Retired transport official CLN Gandhi says his name made him conscious of Mahatma Gandhi’s values. NIMS employee Subhas Chandra Bose says the name brought pressure to avoid mediocrity. Former BRS MLA Nomula Bhagat was named after Bhagat Singh. Analyst S Ramakrishna says such names carry historical memory into ordinary lives and daily choices.
