More than 10,000 vacancies have been created in the first phase, with another 14,000 posts planned. A large share of recruits will join the Bureau of Immigration, whose strength is expected to rise from about 7,000 to 20,000. The Bureau of Immigration currently manages 59 of India’s 114 immigration check posts, according to November 2024 government data. The new expansion is expected to bring all check posts under its control. The move aims to strengthen checks against illegal infiltration, smuggling, narcotics trafficking, drone threats and organised crime.
