# IIT Bombay to set up first overseas campus in New York 2026-08-26T18:11:30+00:00 | Governance | Indian Opinion Desk Corroboration: 1 independent outlet The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has signed a Letter of Intent with SUNY Old Westbury in New York to establish its first overseas campus through a campus-in-campus model. It is the first such international initiative by an Indian higher education institution. Initially, IIT Bombay will offer a certificate programme in Artificial Intelligence, sustainability and clean technology. It plans to later introduce undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees and set up research laboratories. Admissions will not follow the JEE Advanced system used in India. The institution's extensive US alumni network is expected to support the initiative. More details on the launch will be announced later. ## Indian Opinion Analysis This move by IIT Bombay departs from the independent campus model used by earlier IIT branches abroad and by Amity University in London. Under India's National Education Policy 2020, top universities are encouraged to internationalise. The campus-in-campus arrangement lowers infrastructure costs and regulatory hurdles. With IIT Bombay's US alumni base and growing global demand for AI and clean-tech skills, the success of the certificate programme will be a key test. The next milestone is the announcement of admissions and programme details before the launch. ## Coverage - opportunities-insight.britishcouncil.org Presents the announcement factually with a British Council expert comment appended separately.
