Varun Batchigari, a 20-year-old Indian national, has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend, 19-year-old University of Arizona student Julissa Rubi Salazar. She was found dead in her Tucson apartment on August 6 after her family requested a welfare check. Police said she had signs of trauma including marks around her neck. According to US media reports cited by Indian outlets, Salazar had planned to end the relationship because of Batchigari's alleged history of domestic violence and sexual assault. Batchigari allegedly used her bank card to flee to Houston and then Berlin, where German authorities detained him. He faces extradition to Arizona on a first-degree murder charge.
