According to a Reddit post by his siblings, Mubayi last spoke to his family at about 8.30 pm on 1 August and shared his GPS coordinates before contact ended. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office began a search after his family reported him missing. Authorities have not said how he fell into the water. Investigators have found no sign of foul play so far, and the inquiry continues.
