The number of Indian institutions in the global list rose from 11 in QS WUR 2015 to 52 in QS WUR 2027. Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar attributed the growth partly to the NIRF, which ranks domestic institutions annually. Participation in NIRF itself has surged, with applications more than doubling from 6,272 in 2021 to 14,163 in 2025. The government also listed schemes such as RUSA, PM-USHA, and the Institutions of Eminence programme as helping improve higher education quality.
