A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern Sumatra on Saturday, hours after a 7.7-magnitude quake hit Indonesia’s Flores region, killing at least 47 people, the German Research Centre for Geosciences and local agencies reported. Deccan Herald and Times Now put the death toll at 47; Rediff said 38. The shallower 7.7 quake at 15 km depth caused building collapses, landslides, and a tsunami warning that was later lifted. Aftershocks of magnitudes 6.2, 6.5 and lower followed. Rescuers in Maumere were searching for two villagers buried under mud. Power cuts and road damage hampered relief. About 2,000 people fled their homes in Nagekeo regency. The Indonesian disaster agency deployed a helicopter for evacuations.
