# Iran rejects Trump’s threat to declare Strait of Hormuz US territory

Iran on Saturday rejected US President Donald Trump's claim that he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz part of US territory. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the strait "has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian" and will only be opened under Iran's command. Trump made the remark at a New York political rally. The Wall Street Journal reported an unnamed White House official later said he was joking. The strait has been effectively closed by Iran since the West Asia war began in February. An attack on an ADNOC vessel was reported Saturday. Iran says it has agreed with Oman on a shipping route through the strait.
