China has lodged a formal protest against Japan’s new defence white paper, which calls Beijing Tokyo’s “greatest strategic challenge”. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jing accused Japan of repeating the “China threat” narrative and interfering in Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory. Japan’s Cabinet approved the nearly 600-page document on Tuesday, warning that China’s expanding military activity requires stronger national capabilities and closer cooperation with allies. The paper seeks a wider Indo-Pacific network covering training, troop deployments, equipment and defence industry links. The Hindu reports that Japan also showcased an anti-ship missile with a range of about 1,000 km. The document retains Japan’s three non-nuclear principles, while Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has said a debate on changing its nuclear pledge cannot be avoided.
