Karate expert Shihan Hussaini passes away after battling blood cancer

Shihan Hussaini, a well-known actor, karate expert, and archery specialist, passed away in Chennai on Tuesday after a long battle with blood cancer. The news of his death was confirmed by his family through a heartfelt post on Facebook.

His body will be kept at his residence, ‘High Command’ in Besant Nagar, Chennai, allowing family members, students, and the public to pay their respects. Later, his body will be taken to Madurai for the final rites.

Hussaini is survived by his wife and daughter. A message from his family on Facebook read, “I’m very sad to inform that HU has left us. HU will be at the High Command, his residence at Besant Nagar until evening.”

In a special tribute to his life and dedication, his family encouraged his students, archers, parents, and coaches to honour him by shooting arrows and performing katas.

A journey shared online

Throughout his battle with cancer, Hussaini documented his journey on social media, openly sharing his experiences. His posts drew widespread attention, and the Tamil Nadu government offered financial aid of Rs 5 lakh for his treatment. Just days before his passing, Hussaini announced his decision to donate his body for medical research.

A versatile personality

Hussaini made his acting debut in 1986 with Kamal Haasan’s film Punnagai Mannan and went on to act in films like Velaikaran with Rajinikanth and Bloodstone. His portrayal of a karate coach in Vijay’s Badri remains memorable. He also acted in Vijay Sethupathi’s Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal and Chennai City Gangsters. Besides his film career, Hussaini appeared as a judge and presenter on various reality shows.
