Basavaraj Horatti resigned as Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman on Friday after the Congress government threatened a no-confidence motion against him. The eight-time MLC said he was “deeply hurt” and did not know why the party asked him to quit. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had twice telephoned Horatti and then met him personally, conveying the high command’s directive to step aside, reports Hindustan Times. Congress had approved Saleem Ahmed as its nominee for the post. Horatti called the move “anti-democratic”, saying the House should elect its presiding officer, not the party high command. BJP criticised Congress for violating convention by announcing a candidate while the chair was still occupied.
