# Half of east Bengaluru PGs illegal, Karnataka HC issues rules

Nearly half of the 5,000 paying guest (PG) accommodations in east Bengaluru are operating illegally, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) told the Karnataka High Court. The GBA said 2,500 PGs lack proper licences, plan sanctions or fire safety compliance. Justice Suraj Govindaraj issued 81 directions covering identification, inspection, fire safety, occupancy limits and security. Authorities must classify violations: immediate threats to life require urgent action. Officials who fail to act will face personal liability. The court posted the matter for further hearing on September 28.
