Karnataka’s new Water Resources Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy on Thursday directed officials to prepare a time-bound action plan to expedite clearances for the proposed Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir Project. The Rs 9,000 crore project across the Cauvery river on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border aims to impound 67.15 tmc ft of water for drinking water supply to Bengaluru and generate 400 MW of power. Tamil Nadu has opposed the project, passing a resolution against it in its Assembly. The minister also discussed the status of the Detailed Project Report, permissions from the Centre, and forest and ecology issues.
