Ashalatha of Athirakuzhi in Chengala drove herself to Chengala Cooperative Hospital around 2.30 p.m. on Friday, told authorities she had consumed poison, and received initial treatment before being transferred to a private hospital in Kozhikode where she died around noon on Sunday. Women police personnel recorded her statement at the hospital. Her husband Ajayakumar, who works in the Gulf, returned home on Saturday after learning of her hospitalisation. She is survived by two children, Yadukrishnan and Agnivesh.
