A Kerala district consumer commission held Union Bank of India responsible after Rs 10,000 was debited from P.K. Sathian’s account at a Kozhikode ATM on 28 July 2022, without cash being dispensed. Sathian complained to two bank branches but did not receive a refund, and then approached the commission. The bank relied on the ATM’s Electronic Journal to claim the withdrawal had succeeded. The commission said the journal alone was insufficient and noted that the bank had not provided CCTV footage. It ordered a Rs 10,000 refund and Rs 5,000 compensation within 30 days. Delayed payment will carry 9% annual interest.
