# Kerala Independence Day events stress democracy, secularism

Kerala marked its 80th Independence Day on August 15 with district-level ceremonies in Kollam and Ernakulam. In Kollam, Forest Minister Shibu Baby John said democracy and secularism must continue to flourish, while citing disaster preparedness, wildlife protection and fishermen’s role in rescue work. Twenty-three platoons joined the parade at Asramam ground. In Ernakulam, Higher Education Minister Roji M. John called for a country free from divisions based on religion, caste, race and language. The Southern Naval Command also held a wreath-laying ceremony and parade at INS Garuda. Vice-Admiral Sameer Saxena described the Navy as a combat-ready force with blue-water capability and regional responsibilities.
