# Kerala researchers solve 150-year confusion, discover new seahorse species 2026-08-08T17:43:25+00:00 | India | Indian Opinion Desk Corroboration: 1 independent outlet Researchers from Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) have identified a new seahorse species, Hippocampus amandavincentae, solving a taxonomic puzzle that persisted for 150 years. The species, previously mistaken for the widespread thorny seahorse Hippocampus histrix, was found in fish bycatch at Tuticorin fisheries harbour and photographed alive on rocky reefs off Anchuthengu at 15-metre depth. The study, published in Zootaxa, shows that the thorny seahorse is actually three distinct species. The new seahorse is named after marine biologist Amanda Vincent.
