The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the buttocks and down each leg. When a spinal nerve is compressed or inflamed, it can produce a sharp, burning, electric-like pain that radiates into the thigh, calf or foot. Dr Kalidutta Das, chief and director of spine services at ISIC Multispeciality Hospital, warns that symptoms such as tingling, numbness or weakness in the affected leg, and pain that worsens after sitting, coughing or sneezing, should not be ignored. However, not all leg pain is sciatica, muscle strain, joint problems and blood vessel issues can cause similar symptoms. Severe pain lasting several weeks, trouble walking, or numbness around the inner thighs and genitals require immediate medical attention.
