# LightSpeed Photonics develops compact optical links for AI data centres

LightSpeed Photonics, a Hyderabad based deep-tech startup, is building solderable optical interconnects that sit near the processor to move data across network cards, switches and computing hardware, replacing the copper wiring and bulky pluggable transceivers used in data centres today, New Indian Express reported. Founder and chief executive Dr Rohin Y said the patented design integrates four lasers and lenses with electronics and fibre into a package roughly the size of a SIM card, moving 400 gigabytes of data every second. He credited heterogeneous integration, physics, electronics, materials engineering and software combined into one system, for interconnects he says are 20 times smaller, use three to five times less power and carry three times the bandwidth of standard transceivers. The company is now running pilots with chip makers, equipment manufacturers and data centre operators, with commercialisation and global expansion targeted over the next five years.

## Indian Opinion Analysis

LightSpeed Photonics is targeting a genuine bottleneck, the power and space that copper interconnects use as AI and high performance computing scale up, with a specific design: near packaged optics the size of a SIM card moving 400 gigabytes a second. Every performance figure in the report, the 20 times size reduction, the three to five times power saving and the three times bandwidth gain, is attributed to the company itself rather than to an independent test or customer result. Manufacturability and long term reliability remain in development. The pilots now running with chip makers, equipment manufacturers and data centre operators are the stage at which the claimed figures meet outside hardware.
