# Liu He’s Tomb Yields Millions of Coins and Han Dynasty Gold

Archaeologists excavating the Tomb of the Marquis of Haihun in Jiangxi Province found nearly 2 million ancient bronze coins and about 115 to 120 kilograms of gold. The tomb belonged to Liu He, who was emperor of China for 27 days in 74 BC before being removed. He was later made Marquis of Haihun. The site was discovered after a suspected robbery tunnel was found in 2011. Excavations also uncovered thousands of bamboo slips, including classical Confucian texts, a bronze mirror bearing what researchers believe is the oldest surviving portrait of Confucius, and a horse-and-chariot burial pit. The finds offer a broader view of Western Han wealth, rituals and scholarship.
