# Louisiana wetland revival brings shrimp and crabs back in a year

One year after Louisiana completed a wetland restoration project in the Barataria Basin, shrimp, crabs and red drum have returned to the newly created habitat. Engineers dredged 8 million cubic yards of sediment from the Mississippi River between 2022 and 2023 to build 1,170 acres of marsh and 89 acres of tidal ponds and channels. Monitoring by The Water Institute and Nicholls State University has confirmed target species using the restored ecosystem. The project, funded as part of Deepwater Horizon oil spill recovery, exceeded its original target by 76 acres. Louisiana's wetlands support a seafood industry that generated over $120 million from blue crab and white shrimp in 2024.
