# Lucknow woman born at Independence shares nation’s journey

Lucknow-based Vijay Kumari, born in Varanasi at midnight on August 15, 1947, says her age matches that of India. Her birthday made her popular at school, where Independence Day functions and morning processions marked the occasion. Her husband, Major Dhirendra Nath Singh of the Kumaon Regiment, received the Vir Chakra for gallantry in the 1965 India-Pakistan war after losing a leg in a mine blast. He died on April 4, 2025. Their two sons and a grandson served or are serving in the Army. Kumari also recalls her family giving up one meal a day during the foodgrain crisis after Lal Bahadur Shastri’s appeal.
