MacKenzie Scott, who has given away tens of billions of dollars since 2019, wrote in a June 2021 blog post that social-change stories should centre on people facing inequities, not on wealthy donors. 'People struggling against inequities deserve centre stage in stories about the change they are creating,' she wrote, adding that putting large donors at the centre distorts their role. Scott announced $2.7 billion in donations to 286 organisations in the same post, titled 'Seeding by Ceding', published on Medium with her then-husband Dan Jewett. She said she had wanted the headline to read '286 Teams Empowering Voices the World Needs to Hear', rather than highlight her own giving.
