Mahindra & Mahindra has set a target to capture 5% of the heavy truck market, using onboard AI, fuel-efficiency gains and uptime guarantees, the Economic Times reports. The company, which already holds a strong No.2 position in passenger vehicles, is leveraging its recently acquired SML Mahindra entity to plug gaps in its commercial vehicle portfolio and challenge leaders Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland. Vinod Sahay, president of Trucks and Buses, told Mint that two new engines are under development over the next two years to help double Mahindra's share in intermediate commercial vehicles from the current 4-4.5%. The company plans to expand into 16-18 tonne two-axle trucks and will focus initially on electric school and staff buses, avoiding the subsidised city e-bus segment under PM E Drive.
