Times of India reports that male Australian redback spiders' self-sacrificial somersault during mating, which places their abdomen near the female's fangs, is controlled by a single genetic region on the X chromosome, according to a study in Biology Letters led by Kardelen Özgün Uludağ. The behaviour, though physically complex, challenges the idea that such traits require many interacting genes. Researchers bred redbacks with New Zealand katipo spiders, which lack the somersault, and analysed 104 male offspring. Only males with the specific X-linked region performed the somersault, while abdominal narrowing, another trait, was inherited independently. The findings suggest that even complex behaviours can have a simple genetic foundation.
