A 35-year-old drunk autorickshaw driver was arrested by Ariyur police in Vellore on Friday for killing his mother over a dispute in fixing a portrait of deceased father in the house.
Police said the arrested person was identified as J. Karthik. He was the youngest son of K. Jagadeesan and J. Mithiradevi , 55. He was living with his parents in the town.
Initial inquiry revealed that Jagadeesan died due to sickness a year ago. Mithiradevi was taking care of household expenses by working as a house maid in the area. She used to quarrel with her son Karthik, to discontinue his habit of consuming liquor.
Police said Karthik blamed his deceased father for not securing him a good job and property, resulting in him becoming an autorickshaw driver. As a result, he objected to the portrait of his deceased father in the house.
The issue came up between Karthik and his mother, who wanted her husband’s portrait in the house. In a fit of rage, he took a kitchen knife and slit her throat and fled the spot.
Police said as neighbours saw Karthik running out of the house, they went inside and saw Mithiradevi in a pool of blood. They alerted the police, who shifted the body to Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore for postmortem. A case was registered. Karthik was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
