# Manipur starts GI tag process for six indigenous crops

The Manipur Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation has begun Geographical Indications registration for six indigenous crops: Heimang (Chinese sumac), Kanglayen (split-gill mushroom), Chatrik Umorok (king chilli), Talui Garlic, Makhyatmubi (garden pea) and Khousabung Pineapple. Director K Devdutta Sharma said NERAMAC is handling the process under an NEC programme, which may take six months to a year. GI tagging protects products linked to a region’s unique heritage. Manipur already has GI tags for Kachai Lemon, black rice (Chakhao), Tamenglong orange and Sirarakhong chilli.
