It is the first such instance in the 66-year history of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation that a councillor was sworn in under court orders. The case stems from the municipal election, where BJP candidate Pradeep Shukla Tinku had won by about 1,700 votes. Tiwari challenged the result in court, alleging Shukla submitted incorrect marital status in his affidavit. An additional district judge set aside Shukla’s election five months ago and declared Tiwari elected. After months of inaction, Tiwari moved the High Court. On May 21, the court froze the mayor’s financial and administrative powers for non-compliance.
