# Delhi and Bengaluru race to build stray dog shelters after court order

MCD has sought five acres at Ghazipur for a second stray dog shelter after Delhi High Court ordered a ward-wise sterilisation pilot project. Standing committee chairperson Satya Sharma said the land, next to an MCD veterinary hospital, needs government approval. The under-construction Dwarka centre is not yet operational. Only 13 of 20 animal birth control centres are running, cutting monthly sterilisation capacity to 8,500 dogs. NGOs that fail standards face removal. In Bengaluru, BNCC will start shifting institutional stray dogs this week to its new Medi Agrahara shelter, built at Rs 2 crore for 500 dogs. Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar said the operator, Bhootpurva Sainik Welfare Sansthan, has a one-year contract at Rs 3,050 per dog per month. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board has meanwhile asked West City Corporation for clearances on its Sumanahalli shelter, flagging possible wastewater discharge into the Vrishabhavathi river.
