The programme includes habitat restoration, scientific research, monitoring, stronger protection, landscape connectivity, staff training, community participation and public awareness. The Forest and Environment Department is preparing an action plan. A scientific assessment has so far identified 21 clouded leopards in Balpakram National Park. Surveys will extend to other major habitats to estimate Meghalaya’s population. The vulnerable species faces habitat loss, illegal hunting, prey depletion, roads, disturbance and climate change.
