# MHA orders states to enforce Flag Code, protect national flag dignity

The Union home ministry on Monday directed all states and Union territories to follow the Flag Code of India, 2002, warning that paper flags waved at national events must not be thrown on the ground or discarded. In a letter to chief secretaries, the MHA said a “perceptible lack of awareness” exists among people and government agencies about laws governing display of the national flag. It asked states to run mass awareness campaigns through print and electronic media. The ministry stressed the flag represents the nation’s hopes and must occupy a position of honour. It reminded authorities that a damaged or dishevelled flag should not be displayed, and no other flag should fly from the same masthead. The order follows the July 19, 2022 amendment to the Flag Code and comes ahead of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign tied to the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram.
