# Modi Warns Against ‘Dimaagi Naxals’ in Independence Day Speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said armed Naxalism was “breathing its last” and warned against people he called “dimaagi Naxals”. Speaking from the Red Fort on Independence Day, Modi alleged that those with Maoist thinking remained in public life and were seeking opportunities to promote violence and unrest. He called for them to be identified and isolated, while urging that young people be connected with the mainstream. Modi said Naxal violence had held large parts of India under the grip of guns for four decades. He claimed more than 3,500 security personnel had died protecting citizens and said areas once affected by insurgency were now seeing development. The remarks formed part of his wider Independence Day address.
