Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India had rapidly progressed over the past 12 years, moving from the ‘Fragile Five’ group to the world’s fastest-growing major economy. Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, he credited citizens for the change and said 25 crore people had emerged from poverty. Modi cited fourfold growth in defence production, sevenfold growth in electronic manufacturing, 21-fold growth in high-tech railway coach production and 33-fold growth in mobile phone manufacturing. He also said internet users and patents had quadrupled, while digital transactions had doubled. He set a goal of building a developed India by 2047.
