# Modi urges parties to implement 33% women’s quota swiftly

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 urged all political parties to support the swift implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. Speaking from the Red Fort, he said parties could take credit for the move but should ensure women receive their “rightful due”. Modi referred to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam passed by Parliament and cited women’s leadership in panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations. The Hindu reports that implementation has been held up by political wrangling and a delimitation link. India Today says Modi called the quota the “need of the hour” and said it had been caught in partisan politics.
