Prithviraj Sukumaran has said that Mohanlal's appearance in the upcoming film 'Khalifa' will only be an introduction, with his full story possibly explored in a sequel. The Times of India reports that Mohanlal plays Mambarakal Ahamed Ali, grandfather to Prithviraj's character Mambarakal Aamir Ali. Prithviraj said at a Dubai event that Mohanlal agreed to the role out of affection. The film's poster says 'Khalifa Part One: The Intro', he clarified, asking audiences to expect only that. The Cinema Express review of the trailer describes the film as a gold-smuggling saga directed by Vysakh and written by Jinu V Abraham. The trailer, which runs 2 minutes and 37 seconds, references the COFEPOSA Act and shows Prithviraj's character as a notorious smuggler in conflict with politicians and rivals. Neil Nitin Mukesh makes his Malayalam debut in the film. Mohanlal is expected to have an important role in the planned two-part narrative, the review states. 'Khalifa' is set for a worldwide theatrical release on August 20 as an Onam release. It has received a U/A 16+ certificate. The film also stars Malavika Sharma, Renji Panicker, Indrans, and Shammi Thilakan. Koimoi noted that Mohanlal's cameo in the trailer has generated significant excitement, and that his cameos in films like 'Kayamkulam Kochunni' and 'Jailer' previously boosted box office numbers.
