Rainy monsoon days can disrupt the body's internal clock and reduce mood-regulating chemicals like serotonin and melatonin, according to Hyderabad-based psychologists. N Nandini of Renova Century Hospitals says sunlight helps form vitamin D3 and signals the brain's hypothalamus. Dr Naveen Kumar Dhagudu of Yashoda Hospitals adds that overcast skies interfere with circadian rhythm, leading to poor sleep, daytime fatigue, and impaired concentration. Spending 15-30 minutes in morning sunlight can help regulate the clock. The experts note that a few sluggish days are normal, but if low energy and mood last for weeks and recur every monsoon or winter, it could indicate seasonal affective disorder or depression. Limited outdoor time, social withdrawal, and commute stress may worsen anxiety and irritability during the rains.
