# Seven dead in Mumbai Ghatkopar landslip, rescue on

Seven people died and several were injured after a landslip hit Gaushiya Chawl in Ghatkopar West around 3.48 am on August 12. Soil and debris from a hillside collapsed on two to three houses. The rescue operation, joined by the NDRF and BMC personnel, faces difficulty because the approach is extremely narrow. One person remained trapped under debris as of Wednesday morning, The Hindu reports. Among the deceased is a family of four, Arif Shaikh, his wife Marjina, and their children Manat and Aban, who had moved from Jaunpur just four days ago, the Times of India reports. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia for each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. The BMC says it had previously issued warnings to residents in the area to vacate.
