The Muthupettai police have registered a case against four BJP leaders of Tamil Nadu under three sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) claiming that their speeches at a meeting organised by their party in support of the recent amendments to the Waqf Act at Muthupettai on May 17, were aimed at disturbing the harmony between the members of two different religions.
According to a complaint forwarded by Muthupettai Police Station sub-inspector Rahul to Inspector of Police Kazhaniappan, the accused persons — BJP State General Secretary Muruganandam, Tiruvarur District BJP President V.K. Selvam, BJP Minority Wing National Secretary Syed Ibrahim and BJP National Executive Committee member H.Raja — delivered speeches to ‘incite religious clashes’.
Subsequently, a case under Sections 196(1)9b), 197 and 353(1)(b) of BNS was filed on May 21 night, the official sources said.
