Myanmar Earthquake: A powerful Earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread panic and destruction, with reports emerging of a mosque collapsing in Mandalay. The tremors, felt across several regions, sent residents fleeing from their homes as buildings shook violently. While the extent of casualties remains unclear, fears of injuries and fatalities are growing as rescue efforts get underway. The quake, followed by strong aftershocks, also damaged roads, bridges, and religious structures, adding to the chaos. Authorities are assessing the situation as emergency teams rush to affected areas.

Casualties so Far

Though an official confirmation is awaited, reports said that at least 25 people have died, with many others injured, after two massive earthquakes struck Myanmar. In Mandalay, 20 fatalities have been confirmed, while several others sustained injuries.

In Taungoo, five people lost their lives due to the tremors. The earthquake also caused devastation in neighboring Thailand, where dozens were injured in Bangkok, and 43 people remain missing. Rescue efforts are underway as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.

A major hospital in Myanmar’s capital has been overwhelmed with injured victims, turning into a “mass casualty area” following the devastating earthquakes that struck the country on Friday. The powerful tremors left widespread destruction, with emergency teams struggling to manage the influx of patients.

In Taungoo, tragedy struck when a monastery sheltering war refugees collapsed due to the earthquake, killing at least five people, including children, local media reported. Rescue operations are underway as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.

The impact of the earthquake was also felt beyond Myanmar’s borders. China’s earthquake agency confirmed that tremors reached the southwestern province of Yunnan. The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported that the quake registered a magnitude of 7.9, according to Xinhua news agency.

Authorities in Myanmar and neighboring countries remain on high alert as aftershocks continue to pose further risks.
