# Myanmar verifies 308,797 Rohingya for possible return from Bangladesh

Myanmar’s military-backed government says 308,797 of the Rohingya refugees verified from Bangladesh’s list were former residents of Rakhine state and could return when security conditions improve. It had verified 426,545 of the 828,824 names by the end of July. Myanmar said 113,507 people could not be verified and classified 4,241 as having been involved in what it called terrorist activities. More than 700,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh after Myanmar’s 2017 military crackdown. Repatriation plans agreed by Myanmar and Bangladesh in 2018 have failed as conflict worsened after the 2021 military takeover and fighting between the army and the Arakan Army. Safe conditions for return remain absent, while poor camp conditions and reduced aid have pushed some refugees towards dangerous sea journeys.
