# Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran steps down after board split

N Chandrasekaran will not seek reappointment as Tata Sons chairman when his term ends on 20 February 2027. He informed the board on 12 August 2026 that he is stepping down after a single board member blocked a five-year extension, citing lack of unanimous support for his reappointment. The proposal had been recommended by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust and recorded by the Nomination and Remuneration Committee in February 2026, but did not pass. Chandrasekaran, 63, spent 40 years at the Tata Group, including a decade as chairman. His FY26 remuneration was Rs 158.66 crore. Livemint reports his resignation may be linked to tensions with Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata. A five-member selection committee will choose the next chairman. Shares of several Tata Group companies, including TCS and Tata Steel, fell on the news. The annual general meeting is scheduled for 18 August.
