On Nagasaki Day, the story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only person officially recognised by Japan as a survivor of both atomic bombings, is being remembered. He was in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, for work when the first bomb exploded, leaving him with severe burns. He returned home to Nagasaki the next day. On August 9, while describing the Hiroshima blast to his supervisor, the second bomb detonated overhead. Yamaguchi survived again, as did his wife and son, though radiation sickness affected them for years. He stayed silent for decades before becoming a nuclear abolition advocate, telling his story at the UN in 2006 and in a documentary. He died in 2010 at 93.
