New observations from NASA's Chandra, Webb, and Hubble telescopes reveal that the Tarantula Nebula, also known as 30 Doradus, contains far less X-ray-emitting gas than scientists expected. The research, published in the Astrophysical Journal, suggests that up to half of the hot gas heated by stellar winds may be leaking through the nebula's gas and dust shells. Other energy may be lost when cold gas mixes with hot gas, lowering temperatures, or through thermal conduction between hot and cool material in dense regions. The Tarantula Nebula lies 160,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The study brings together X-ray data from Chandra, infrared data from Webb, and optical data from Hubble, along with observations from the retired Spitzer Space Telescope. The findings help astronomers understand stellar feedback, the process by which young massive stars shape their surroundings and influence future star formation.
