NASA has confirmed that its DART mission successfully shortened the orbit of asteroid Dimorphos by 32 minutes, far exceeding the 73-second minimum success threshold. The spacecraft struck the small moonlet at 14,000 mph in September 2022, using a kinetic impact method to alter its trajectory. Dimorphos orbits the larger asteroid Didymos, and both were 6.8 million miles from Earth at the time. The result, announced on 11 October 2022, marks humanity's first successful demonstration of asteroid deflection. Debris ejected from the surface helped push the asteroid further off course. The European Space Agency's Hera mission will later survey the impact site to gather more data.
