Mendoza had claimed the baby’s mother, Mayra Navarro, agreed to give up the child, but Navarro denied ever meeting her or consenting. Mendoza and her husband, Arturo Calderon Gamino, were arrested after taking the baby to a Mexico City hotel. Mendoza was convicted of kidnapping in 2011 and sentenced to more than 13 years in prison. Gamino spent two and a half years in jail before his acquittal. The release date for Mendoza differs between reports. Us Weekly said she left prison in 2022, while The Sun reported 2023. She now lives in Mexico and has said prison helped her accept that motherhood was not her only purpose.
