Using a detector 400 metres from France’s Chooz B plant, the team analysed 2.5 weeks of data while both reactors were offline. It recorded around 106 candidate events. Statistical analysis found that 56% of the signal came from reactor cores and 44% from cooling pools. Removing fuel to extract plutonium would reduce the pool’s neutrino signal.
